JCB Prize for Literature 2019 shortlist

JCB Prize for Literature, established in 2018, owners and recognises Indian authors writing in English. It offers a huge cash award of Rs 25 lac to the winner. In the second year of its continuing journey, JCB Prize of Literature has announced the longlist of authors on 4 September 2019 in an event in Mumbai. 

First of all, take a look at the long list of authors: 

Ib’s Endless Search for Satisfaction by Roshan Ali, Published by Penguin Random House

The Queen of Jasmine Country by Sharanya Manivannan, Published by HarperCollins 

Trial by Silence and Lonely Harvest by Perumal Murugan, translated from the Tamil by Aniruddhan Vasudevan, Published by Penguin Random House India

A Patchwork Family by Mukta Sathe, Published by Speaking Tiger Publishing Private Limited

My Father’s Garden by Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar, Published by Speaking Tiger Publishing Private Limited

A Secret History of Compassion by Paul Zacharia, Published by Westland Publications

Four novelists have just made their debuts – Roshan Ali, Madhuri Vijay, Mukta Sathe and Amrita Mahale. There were five judges on the panel responsible for reading the submissions and bringing out the longlist. Pradip Krishen (a filmmaker and also an active environmentalist), Arvind Subramanian (economist), Anjum Hasan (author), Parvati Sharma (author), and K. R. Meera (author) were the five members and the chair was decorated by Pradip Krishen. The jury members said that the long list reflects the varied offerings Indian fiction offers today. It perfectly synchronises with the nature of Indian literature – free and moving. 

The long list with 10 novels and novelists will further shrink to a shortlist that will comprise of 5 titles and their authors. The JCB Prize for Literature will announce the shortlist on 4 October 2019 and the winner will be announced on 2nd November 2019.
