Literature lovers, a new year is here and we begin with January hanging on our walls attached to a calendar. We have decided to begin the year by telling what are some of the most important dates in January which the literature lovers might be interested in – celebrating some of them and knowing about some as well. So, we have decided to include the following dates and also, we have included a brief introduction to the event. Hope you will enjoy the same!
1st January: You must be busy in celebrating the new year today. However, this date becomes significant for the literary lovers because, in 1919, Jerome David Salinger was born on this day! Widely known for his debut novel The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger was a short-story writer majorly and he was known for writing about youths in his works. He led a very much private life and was content with a ‘no publicity’ lifestyle.
3rd January: Well, this date becomes very much related to all those who have watched the movies or read the novel The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Yes, we are talking about the man who wrote all these – J. R. R. Tolkien’s was born on the same date in the year 1892! He was also a professor of Old English at Oxford University. So, for the lovers of his fantasy works, Tolkien’s birthday might be a day to celebrate!
4th January: Well, that’s a sad day for all those who are masters in fishing in a dry pond or a drain like T. S. Eliot – he died on 4th January 1965 before being immortal on the pages of literature! His admirers might want to remember this day and pay tributes to the legend of free verse. We don’t think T. S. Eliot needs our introduction against his name!
8th January: Do you remember the novel Woman in White? Yes, we are talking about the novelist Wilkie Collins – he was born on the same day in 1824.
13th January: This is the sad day for James Joyce’s fans because the unconventional novelist named James Joyce died in the year 1941 on the same day. He was the author of some of the well-known novels like Ulysses and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
14 January: Well, most of the Indians celebrate Makar Sankranti on this day but literature lovers must know that the legendary author of the legendary novel Alice in the Wonderland, Lewis Caroll (pen name) died on the same day in the year 1898. You should know that the real name of the author was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and he was also a mathematician.
18th January: Do you remember this – For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack? Yes, we are talking of the novelist who created the immortal children legend The Jungle Book – Rudyard Kipling. He died on 18 January 1936 and his demise might be noted as a day of discussion on his produced literature because his birthday must be celebrated by the kids in a Halloween like party! Kipling was also a well-known poet majorly known among the poetry enthusiast for his poem “If” and many others. He was born in Mumbai, India.
19 January: Well, after a sad, comes a happy day! Known for his short stories and poetry packed with mysteries and adventure, Edgar Allan Poe was born on 19th January 1809. He has authored many immortal works of fiction and some of them are – The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven and A Dream Within a Dream.
21st January: Well, one more death and then we pack the death story! Gorge Orwell, the author famous for his 1984 and Animal Farm, died on 21st January in the year 1950. Who needs to introduce him?
27th January: Well, well, well! This is the birthday of our beloved Lewis Caroll! He was born on 27 January 1832!
28th January: How many of us are the fans of Jane Austen? Well, we guessed it! All of us! And for all of us, the date 28th January should be nothing less than a celebration because we can host discussions on her celebrated novel Pride and Prejudice because the same was published on 28th January 1813!
